Better than drugs.

After two days of teaching in Hanoi are completed, we get the privilege to sit down and listen to people sharing from their lives. The first one up is Vu Khai.  “Thank you for letting me share from my life” are Vu’s first words. With a face shining in a way that is impossible not to notice, he tells us that he now has accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. “That’s why people can see it in my face that I have peace with God” he says. He tells us that until a few months back he used to live a horrible life. Sin took everything away from him; his money, his job and his family.

His reputation had also been destroyed. He was born in a very good family, with a father who worked as an officer in the army, and a mother holding a prominent position in the government. His family did so well that it looked like they had everything one could want in life. Vu had the opportunity to go to a good college, and he also had the chance to study abroad, so everything seemed to be set for a bright future.
“But there are a lot of evil tings in this world”, as Vu puts it. He tells about how his grandmother started to give him alcohol and cigarettes when he became a little older. She just wanted to make him happy, but the result was that he became addicted to drugs at the age of 14. Ever more heavy drugs were necessary to satisfy his addiction; ecstasy, marihuana, amphetamine, heroin, cocaine… Vu got totally addicted.
When he became an adult and got married, he wanted to quit all this, but he couldn’t manage. He ended up as a thief to get enough money to fill his needs. He was put in jail, and after he got out his reputation was destroyed. People looked at him with judgemental eyes. Even though he finally managed to stop using drugs and get a job, he still had a lot of bad habits. He lived under harsh circumstances because his parents had lost all respect for him. His marriage broke, his wife got a new boyfriend, and his son had to live with his ex-wife’s mother. Vu tried to find meaning in life by sleeping with a lot of girls, but none of that could make him happy. Many times, he just wanted to end his life.

When I met him in Hanoi, it was only four months since he had been radically changed. He had found Christ – or maybe I should say that Christ had found him. Vu tells us that he got up very early one morning, at 3AM. Life felt unbearable, so he shouted out for a God that he didn’t know yet: “Why am I in this horrible situation?” After that he went to work out, and there in the park he met an evangelist who told him about Jesus. Because of this testimony Vu went to the church to give his life to Christ, and he got hold of a bible. He started to read it, and kept on reading and praying until he came to the part of Matthew where it says “I baptize you with water, but he who comes after me is stronger than me. I am not even worthy of loosening the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire”. Suddenly this exact thing happened which Vu later has been reading about in the book of Acts. His whole body was full of heat, and felt like it came out of his mouth. He heard a sound like thunder right above his head, and it felt like fire came down his spine and he spoke as if he couldn’t control it himself. This was an experience that changed his life completely. Vu says that now he understands that nothing in this world has any value. Only God’s word will remain forever. After he accepted the Lord and got baptized in the Holy Spirit, his whole life has become like a miracle. When he reads his Bible, and prays, he feels peace inside; Vu says it feels like being in heaven. Everything is changed. Now he will gladly share the gospel with anyone who will listen, and the peace and joy inside far exceeds being high on drugs. It’s not hard for him at all to lay those things behind. ¨
I ask him how his family handles the changes? He says that they were very much against it in the beginning, because he quit a good job when he became a Christian. After a while, however, his parents have seen how his life has changed, and they have started to respect him again. His mom has become a Christian herself, and his six years old son also believes in Jesus, says the smiling newly saved Vietnamese.
