What you did to the least of these
“There was a woman that was both deaf and dumb, and badly equipped in life. A young woman lived somewhere in north of India. She got raped and became pregnant. Because of this, everyone grew a hate for her. One of her uncles let her stay with him for a while but when she was about to give birth, the people of the town came to her uncle’s house and insisted that he had to send her away. They would not allow women like her in the city. And so, they sent her down the Bengali-river where the livestock uses to pasture. She was placed in a small shack and there she gave birth to a little baby. This baby was born too early. She was placed naked on the floor next to her mother. The mother was sick because of a lack of nutrition. The baby was tiny and pitiful. The two of them had probably been laying like this for one or two days when Arem got to know about this. Arem went to this village every Sunday to teach the women there. She went straight to the place where these two poor once were staying. She found them in this horrible condition. Arem and the a friend prayed for the woman and her daughter. Then they brought them to a hospital in Siliguri. They were treated in the intensive care division for over a week. The mother was lacking a lot of blood. The baby was so tiny that the doctor said she probably wouldn’t survive, but he promised to do his best.”

“By the grace of God”, says Silas, “both of them made it.” They stayed at the hospital for three weeks. After that, Silas and Arem took them to their own home. They stayed there until they recovered completely. “We wanted to send them back to the village where they came from, but some relatives of the woman said she wouldn’t be able to take care of her baby. Because of this, the little girl is now living in our orphanage. The mother is living with an aunt and uncle where she has to work with carrying water and taking care of the animals. That’s hard work but sometimes when she has time and energy, she comes to visit her little baby girl at the orphanage.”
